ABOUT DR SHOMO KNOWS
Over the past 2 years, Dr Shomo Knows has expanded beyond my expectations of discussing medicine, health, and wellness topics. We now have the DSK Book Club that features books that create discussion on a number of social justice topics anti-racism, criminal justice reform, women's rights, gender equality, health care reform, etc. We also started the Health is Love brand (trademark pending) that focuses on healthy coping. These are all different aspects of my journey to balance the exchange of health information, social justice advocacy, and recovery time to recharge.
My Why: I started this journey to help spread reliable and accurate information about a number of topics in medicine. I find that many of my patients receive misinformation on a number of topics. I aim to provide a forum for reliable information and discussion of facts vs myths.
My Motto: Love. Light. Knowledge.
Love, because I do this all for the love of community because I believe that I would have never made it here without a huge village of people. I try to recreate that sense of community in many of the things that I do. I call this aspect of myself the "Community Physician."
Light, because although I have experienced a lot of dark things in my life, I choose to live my life in the light. Humor is one of the main coping skills that I learned from my family. I love to laugh and have fun especially with my family. I call this aspect of myself the "Vybrant Nerd" TM
Knowledge, because as a Black woman I am assumed to know nothing. I have been in many rooms where I have been the expert and I was ignored and dismissed. This word is my biggest protest and the reason that I named my business "Dr Shomo Knows." I had to fight a long battle to get to where I am today and I will not be ignored or dismissed. I do not claim to know everything but I have survived a lot of things as a child/teen then trained for 12 years to become a physician and I have been practicing Family Medicine/Geriatrics for 6 years now. I may know a few things.
